AUTOMATED WOODWORKING
One of the sectors in which Effedi Automation is developing more expertise is
the wood industry. This sector has been experiencing an increase in production
in recent years thanks to the use of robots and automation systems.
In this area, we can develop advanced, customised automation solutions to handle multiple operations:
– handling of wooden pallets, panels, covers, boards and crates etc.
– woodworking (sanding, grinding, polishing, cleaning)
The aim is to achieve high performance for wood processing and/or handling, the system developed can be inserted at the start, inside or at the end of the production line.
We developed a collaborative robot cell, using the UR10 (Universal Robot) to which we applied the sanding tool provided by OnRobot. Its special feature is to combine a roto-orbital machine with a 6-axis load cell. This combination is successful because the robot does not simply follow a trajectory, but rather tries to apply the same pressure/force during the sanding
operation.

The benefits of this are manifold:
- Improved sanding quality
- Ability to sand complex surfaces
- Programming speed (only a few points are needed to define the trajectory, the robot will then process the data autonomously to apply the right sanding force over the entire surface).
- Increased flexibility: there is no need to reposition the new workpiece with extreme precision, the robot has an extra “sense”: touch.
Our solution is also specifically designed to manage the disc change in an automated manner. This accessory enables to manage the wear of the disc (or sanding pad) and/or
switch from a coarser to a finer grit in complete autonomy.
